I'm looking at a 2001 mini excavator with 4,300 hours on it. I don't know if it is all original but does the equipment start to go bad after this many hours? What are some main components that go bad first. Also recently looked at a bobcat with 4000+ hours at a good price, but let it go .
I think the 'sweet spot' for value on an excavator is somewhere in the 2000-3000 . A well made excavator engine goes 15-25k hours without a rebuild. An OK . IMO anything over 500 hours should be picked apart/looked over very carefully .
I have a mini-ex and a skidsteer - each has under 3000 hours, and both are . I'm looking at a 2001 mini excavator with 4,300 hours on it. What are some main components that go bad first.Knowing how long a mini excavator lasts is key before buying new gear or sticking with old ones. Also recently looked at a bobcat with 4000+ hours at a good price, but let it go because there was some cylinder slap, so a engine rebuilt wouldn't be far away. It all depends what you want: Do you need a machine that will run day in and day out or do you need a machine for less frequent use. I think the 'sweet spot' for value on an excavator is somewhere in the 2000-3000 hour area, and then the 6-8000 hour area. Over 10000 can still be a good machine, but could be close to a 15k engine or pump, plus most 10k on up machines I see the u/c is getting weak. Generally speaking, an excavator that has been well maintained can last for 20,000 hours or more before needing a major overhaul. However, if an excavator is not properly maintained, it may only last for 10,000 hours.
A well made excavator engine goes 15-25k hours without a rebuild. An OK excavator engine needs a rebuild at 10-15k hours. The hydraulic pumps and motors in any good excavator should go 10-15k, sometimes they last longer if you're lucky, and sometimes they fail earlier than that.

IMO anything over 500 hours should be picked apart/looked over very carefully as there can be tons of wear even with 500 hours. but in saying that I wouldn't mind looking at a mini ex with up to 2500 hours if I had to and depending on how much work I had lined up for it, casual hours versus full time 8 to 10 hours a day would require a lower . I have a mini-ex and a skidsteer - each has under 3000 hours, and both are showing their age (cylinder leaks, chaffed hoses, pin slop, etc. Type of use and level of service/maintenance is a major factor on how long they live and how fast they wear out.Mini-excavators typically offer a similar average lifespan of around 10,000 hours. For both excavators and mini-excavators, you’ll want to pay special attention to the undercarriage wear and the condition of the tracks. The lifespan of a mini excavator is influenced by several factors, including its build quality, usage intensity, and maintenance schedule. Typically, a well-maintained mini excavator from a reputable manufacturer can last between 8,000 to 10,000 hours.
