October 01, 2012, 09:50:18 AM. I'm pretty amazed at how much work a skidsteer mounted mulcher can do, in a short amount of time. My neighbor has one and came over one day to show me how it works (he knows I'm addicted to cool equipment like that :D) I prefer driving posts over an auger. When we first got a driver were on top of a shale hill, about six inches of soil and shale under that. Setting 2 7/8" pipe posts four feet deep. Took twenty minutes to drive the first, thought that was ridiculous, so put the hydraulic auger back on the skid steer. I had a rock bit on my auger and it would drill through asphalt or hard mortar. It also drill easily through Chert. Your ground/rock looks like it would be in between hard rocky dirt and solid mortar. You can get the right bit and auger and a skid steer will make quick work of this.

Could someone give me an opinion using a 2' auger in this rocky soil? I would be using a skid steer. need to go 6' deep. thanks.
